Address Ranging

All addressing ascends from WEST to EAST and from SOUTH to NORTH.

This means that the lowest numbers will be furthest WEST and SOUTH, and the highest numbers will be furthest EAST and NORTH.

ODD numbers fall on the WEST and NORTH sides of the road, while EVEN numbers fall on the EAST and SOUTH sides of the road.

WEST range lines start at the St. Helena/Livingston Parish line (10000) going EAST to the Washington/St. Tammany Parish line(29000).

SOUTH Range lines start at the St. John Parish line (30000) going NORTH to the state line (79000).

The 5-digit address is assigned to a particular structure.

The first 2 digits tell you which range line the address is off of. The address will always be North or East of the range line.

The last 3 digits tell you approximately how far off the range line the structure is. If the house address is 10301 Hwy 1045 you should add a zero to the last three digits and know that the house is approximately 3010 feet from the St. Helena Parish line on the North side of the road.

Street Naming

Road naming is currently governed by the Tangipahoa Parish Council, which typically requires a petition signed by all affected occupants before officially naming a road. Only the roads maintained by the Tangipahoa Parish Council are officially named, but there are many roads in the Parish that do not fall into this category.

Although they aren’t officially named, many of the non-Parish-maintained roads are known by a name. Historically, the public has even recognized a name for many of the Parish numbered roads. For this reason, the Council determined that it would be most beneficial for emergency services to name rather than number all roads in the rural areas of the Parish.

Tangipahoa Parish 911 wants to allow residents or occupants to derive the name of their road, but some considerations must be acknowledged:

➤ No two roads can have the same name

➤ Road names should not be too similar, as this creates confusion (e.g., Sydney Ln. and Sydney Dr.)

➤ Roads should not have the name of a business, unless it is a non-public road

➤ Unless there is extenuating circumstances, a road must provide access to four or more residents before it can be issued a road name and 911 addresses

➤ Only under special circumstances will non-public roads be named and adopted by Tangipahoa Parish 911

Tangipahoa Parish 911 does not determine if the Postal Service will deliver mail on the road you live on. You must contact your postal carrier or postmaster of your community to work out the delivery of your mail and/or how to install your mail receptacle.
